I offer individualized instruction in Western classical music and a variety of fiddle styles, including Irish and Scottish traditional music and old-time music from the Upper Midwestern United States, both in person and virtually.
Too often, music education can be a litany of "do this" and "don't do that" with precious little explanation of the reasoning behind techniques and stylistic choices. My lessons focus not just on what to do but also on the "why" behind it so that students can be equipped to make their own informed musical choices.
As I've grown over the years as a musician and a teacher, I've found that some of the most important parts of music making are often some of the least well taught. I make a special effort to address some of these shortcomings, including focusing on the surprising complexity of what it means to play in tune and the fundamental physicality of playing our instruments - how things like posture and tension can radically affect the sounds we make.
